The Merklín mountain nature trail leads you through the vanished settlements of Upper, Lower and Middle Kaff, abandoned after the expulsion of German residents. The 8 km circular route starts at Merklín station and makes a perfect half‑day trip. Expect mountain meadows, deep forests, remains of old houses and views of surrounding hills. At the site of former Upper Kaff, you’ll find the ruins of a chapel — a place with true genius loci.
